From Bob Towns – Tam was born in Haddington on 19th September 1937 and enlisted in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders (hence his liking for the Cameron Trews) on the 19th January 1956. He served with 1st Camerons in Aden, Dover and Edinburgh and as an Instructor at the Depot in Cameron Barracks. In the QO HLDRS he served in Singapore, Edinburgh, Osnabruck, Berlin, IJLB Oswestry and as a PSI with 2/51 Highland in Stornoway. His final appointment was CQMS of Admin Coy 1 QO HLDRS in Osnabruck a few years prior to his death. As one of his Juniors I always looked up to him and as his obituary in the Regimental Magazine states “As a young NCO he made his name as an outstanding weapon training instructor and obtained a high ‘B’ grading on the Small Arms Course at Hythe . He was also a keen footballer and all round sportsman.”
