From Charles Derbyshire – Copied this obituary from the Regimental Magazine of The Highlanders, 4th Bn Royal Regiment of Scotland – John Alexander Allan (known as Ian) died in December 2011. Ian was born in Dufftown on 30 August 1946. He joined the Junior Leaders at Oswestry and had hoped to join the Royal Military Police, but was not tall enough and so at 18 joined The Gordon Highlanders. He served 64-76, in Borneo, Minden, Cyprus and completed 2 tours in Northern Ireland and retired in the rank of Sgt. Whilst with the Bn he served in both the Recce Pl and Signal Pl and as a result of his time with the Signal Pl, found a job with BT on retiring from the Army – he was one of the chaps you see shinning up telegraph poles and he would have been able to tell you anything you might ever have wanted to have known about the workings of BT in Aberdeenshire. He worked for BT until he retired at 62 and then worked as a part time taxi driver. He married Jane on 19 Mar 66 and they have 2 children.
